If you can sign in to the GHIN app, your GHIN number is on your profile: tap More, then My Profile. On ghin.com, click your name in the top right and choose My Profile (steps per the Golf Association of Philadelphia). If you cannot sign in, ask your club or the state golf association that issued the number. If you have never had one, see how to get a GHIN handicap.
What a GHIN number is
GHIN stands for Golf Handicap and Information Network. WA Golf describes it as a handicapping computational service provided by the USGA through authorized associations and clubs. The number is your unique ID. It lets you post scores, and your Handicap Index is calculated from those scores. It is not the same thing as your handicap: the number identifies you, and the Handicap Index is the figure that changes as you post rounds.
Because the service runs through authorized associations and clubs, those are also the people to ask when you lose your number. See our guide on how a golf handicap works for the handicap side.
Ways to find your GHIN number
1. In the GHIN app
If you are logged in to the GHIN mobile app, tap the "More" menu in the bottom right corner and select "My Profile". This is the method the Golf Association of Philadelphia's help page describes. Your number is shown at the top of your profile.
2. On ghin.com
If you are logged in to ghin.com, click your name in the upper right corner of the page and select "My Profile", per the same Golf Association of Philadelphia page.
3. Reset your login if you are locked out
The Metropolitan Golf Association's help article says to choose "Forgot login" on the sign-in screen and reset your password using your email. Once you are back in, your number is at the top of your profile.
4. Use the USGA Handicap ID lookup
The USGA's FAQ on finding your Handicap ID says that if you have an email address tied to your account you can use its Handicap ID Lookup, and that if you do not, you should contact your club or golf association. We could not open that page ourselves, so check it for the current steps.
5. Ask your club or golf association
If you cannot log in, contact the club where you hold the handicap or your state or regional golf association. Associations handle this in different ways:
- The Golf Association of Philadelphia says to contact your club or the association if you are not logged in, and to say which club you belong to when you email.
- The Northern California Golf Association has a "Forgot GHIN" form for its members, which sends the number by email. It also says members can contact their club, and members of another state's association should contact that association.
- The Metropolitan Golf Association has a chat that sends a verification link to the email on your account, then looks up your number. If your email is not on file, it asks you to contact member services with your full name and your current or former club.
The NCGA instructions are on its help page for lost GHIN numbers. The details differ by association, so find the one that covers the course or club where you registered.
When you contact someone, have your full name as registered, the email address on your account and the name of your current or former club ready.
If you never had a GHIN number
You cannot look up a number that was never issued. You need to join a club or association that offers handicaps. Our guide to getting a GHIN handicap walks through that process, and how to get a golf handicap covers the wider picture.
FAQ
Does my GHIN number change if I switch clubs?
According to the Metropolitan Golf Association, your GHIN number never changes, even if you switch clubs, and you can use the same number when you rejoin. Check with your new club or association if the system does not recognize it.
How many scores do I need for a Handicap Index?
WA Golf says a minimum of three 18-hole or six 9-hole scores are needed to establish a Handicap Index. For a Handicap Index below zero, see our plus handicap page.
