In Ping's G430 range, hybrid lofts run from 17 degrees (a 2 hybrid) to 34 degrees (a 7 hybrid). A 3 hybrid is 18 or 19 degrees in the Callaway and Ping models below, and a 4 hybrid is 21 or 22. Distance depends on swing speed, so this chart is by loft with the nearest iron loft, and the last section shows how to measure your own yardages. For rough single-club figures, see our 3 hybrid, 4 hybrid and 9 hybrid guides. For irons, wedges and shafts as well, browse our golf clubs guide.

Sources: Ping's G430 hybrid page, Callaway's Paradym Ai Smoke hybrid page and Ping's G430 iron page. The last column compares each hybrid to the Ping iron of nearly the same loft, which is one way to decide which iron a hybrid could replace. Callaway's standard model stops at the 6 hybrid, while its separate HL model goes to 8.
The numbers are not universal. Callaway's Paradym Ai Smoke HL hybrid lists 18, 21, 24, 27, 30 and 33 degrees for the 3 to 8 hybrids (Callaway's HL hybrid page). Titleist labels its GT hybrids by loft rather than number: the GT2 comes in 18, 21 and 24 degrees, the GT3 in 19, 21 and 24, and the GT1 in 20, 23, 26 and 29 (Titleist's GT hybrid release).
How to use the chart
- Find the loft of the iron you want to replace. Look up your iron set's loft by club on the maker's spec page. Lofts differ between sets, so do not assume a 4-iron is the same loft in every set.
- Pick the hybrid with the nearest loft. In the Ping G430 range, a 4 hybrid at 22 degrees lines up with the 22 degree 5-iron.
- Check the gap to the club above. If the step between the hybrid and your longest iron is only 1 to 2 degrees, the two clubs overlap and you may want a lower-lofted hybrid or a different club.
- Mind the maker's number. A "4 hybrid" from one maker can be a different loft to another. Buy by loft and test the club, not by the number.
What loft does not tell you
Loft tells you the order of your clubs and how high each tends to launch. It does not tell you how far you hit them. Shaft length, head design, ball speed and strike quality all change the result. The Ping 3 hybrid is 40 1/4 inches long and the 4 hybrid is 39 3/4 inches, according to Ping's page, so each hybrid also has a different length that affects your clubhead speed.
If you are choosing between models, swing speed matters; our guide to shafts for your swing speed explains how flex relates to it.
Why this page does not list yardages
Some hybrid charts publish carry distances with no stated source or method. A chart that says a 4 hybrid goes a fixed number of yards will be wrong for many readers, because swing speed, strike and conditions change the result, so this page sticks to loft and shows you how to measure your own.
How to measure your own hybrid distances
- Use a launch monitor or a range with marked yardages. Many golf shops and ranges have a launch monitor you can book for a short session.
- Warm up, then hit at least five shots with each hybrid and iron. Throw out clear mishits.
- Record carry, not total distance. Carry is where the ball lands, and is the number you need for clearing hazards. Total distance depends on how firm the ground is.
- Average the solid shots. Use at least three solid shots from the five or more you hit.
- Look for gaps. List your clubs from longest to shortest carry. Large gaps between two clubs point to a missing club, and near-identical carries mean two clubs are doing the same job.
Hybrid or long iron
Hybrids and long irons overlap on loft, so the choice is about how each performs for you. Our comparison of the 3 hybrid and 5 hybrid covers how to choose between hybrids, and the 4 iron distance guide covers the long-iron side. Test both from the fairway and the rough on a launch monitor and compare carry, dispersion and how they feel.
