On Delta and Southwest a golf bag is treated as a standard checked bag, so you pay the airline's first-bag fee, which rose to about $45 on several carriers in spring 2026. Check the others' golf rules on their own pages. Weight and size limits still apply, and rules change often, so confirm with your airline before you fly. We read the pages cited below on 7 October 2026.

Source: The Points Guy baggage fee table (May 2026 guide, effective dates shown). Ranges depend on fare type and how you pay. On the airlines whose golf rules we read (Delta and Southwest), a golf bag is charged as a standard checked bag, so this is the starting price. We did not read golf rules for the others. Overweight, oversize, status and card waivers are not shown: check the airline.

"Check airline" means we could not read a current rule on the airline's own page, so we do not state one.

First-bag fees are as listed in The Points Guy (May 2026 guide), so re-verify them. Delta's fee agrees with its baggage page. The Southwest increase is reported by The Points Guy (7 April 2026), and the end of free bags on 28 May 2025 (a $35 first bag) by One Mile at a Time. Fees vary by fare type and how you pay, and some status holders and cardholders get bags free, so look at your own ticket. Alaska and JetBlue appear in the chart for first-bag fees only: we could not read a current golf rule for either.

Delta golf bag rules

Delta's sporting equipment page accepts one golf bag as a standard checked bag, holding one set of clubs, golf balls and tees, and one pair of golf shoes. The limit is 115 linear inches, and oversized items trigger extra fees. Clubs must be in a hard-shell case or a soft-sided golf travel bag, signed for under a limited release. Delta says it is not responsible for damage noted at check-in or damage from over-packing. The page carries no update date, so check it before you travel.

Southwest golf bag rules

Southwest's checked baggage policy sets 50 lb and 62 inches (length plus width plus height) per bag, and says checked baggage fees apply. It does not give a golf-specific rule. The Points Guy says golf bags qualify as checked baggage if they meet the standard weight and size limits, and lists the overweight and oversize tiers in the table. Verify them on Southwest's page, because that article is undated and describes 2025 rules.

Travel tips

  • No special airport screening rule. TSA's page on golf clubs says clubs are not allowed in carry-on and are allowed in checked bags, and that the final decision rests with the TSA officer.
  • Weigh the bag at home. The overweight tiers are expensive compared with the base fee, and 50 lb is the usual line.
  • Check the case rule. Delta requires a hard-shell case or a soft-sided golf travel bag with a signed release.
  • Photograph the bag before you hand it over. It helps if you need to report damage.

Damage and insurance

We could not verify any airline's claim deadline or liability cap for sporting equipment on an official page, so check the airline's contract of carriage and your travel insurance policy before you fly. For other club guides, see the golf clubs hub, or organize the bag before you pack it.
