A membership is worth it when the rounds you will really play, times what you would pay per round elsewhere, exceed what the club costs you each year. That depends on how often you play. Use the calculator below with your own numbers: it spreads the initiation fee over the years you plan to stay. For what clubs charge in initiation fees and dues, see our golf club membership costs guide.
The break-even formula
Break-even rounds = (annual dues + initiation fee ÷ years you will stay) ÷ (green fee you would pay instead − what you still pay per round as a member).
Start with the sourced inputs we have. A 2024 club-leader survey by GGA Partners, as reported by Private Club Marketing, put average operating dues at about $10,700 and average initiation at about $58,000, with medians of about $9,100 and $34,000. These are averages across many clubs, not a quote for any one. Front Office Sports reported a median initiation of $50,000 in 2022. The two medians come from different surveys and years, so they are not comparable. For what dues cover, see golf club dues and assessments.
Put the formula to work
A worked example using the survey averages and a placeholder green fee. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a quote for a club: with $10,700 in dues, a $58,000 initiation fee spread over 10 years ($5,800 a year) and a $100 green fee you would pay otherwise, the yearly cost to belong is $16,500, and the break-even is 165 rounds a year, or about 3 a week. Drop the initiation fee, as at a club with a low or no fee, and the same dues need 107 rounds. Change the numbers in the calculator to see how a cheaper club or a higher public green fee shifts the answer.
Costs people forget
Dues are not the whole bill. Oakmont, for example, reportedly has about a $1,250 monthly charge and a $2,000 annual food and beverage minimum, per Golf.com (June 2025), and Oak Hill reportedly has $300 a month in capital dues on top of its dues (May 2023). Links Magazine lists lockers, cart use, guest fees, minimums and special assessments as further charges. Add them to "annual dues" in the calculator.
Some clubs also limit rounds: Boston Golf Club reportedly limits members to 15 a year plus tournaments, per Golf.com (2020). Whether your initiation fee comes back depends on the club, so read equity vs non-equity memberships before you count it as spent.
When a public pass is cheaper
If you play fewer than the break-even rounds, a pass or pay-as-you-go usually wins. Some municipal passes are inexpensive: Charleston lists a $1,200 annual resident pass and Austin a $1,280 individual card for residents. Compare against that rather than a $100 green fee if you play often enough to qualify.
Beyond the math
Cost per round leaves out tee-time access, the course you would play, and the social side. Our membership cost guide and how much a membership costs on average cover the numbers in more detail.
